Title: Navigating Challenges and Celebrating Successes: Our Water Infrastructure Development Journey in Machakos County

At Itanya Africa Group, we embarked on a mission to address the longstanding issue of dependence on rain-fed agriculture in Machakos County. Our journey has been a testament to the resilience and adaptability required in project management as we encountered obstacles and made crucial pivots along the way. Initially, our plan involved using excavators to dig household water pans, aiming for one pan every two days. However, upon closer examination by an engineer, we discovered significant topographical challenges, including siltation that hindered water retention. Recognizing the need for a new approach, we decided to engage the community youth in the construction process.   With the guidance of a skilled trainer, we conducted capacity building sessions for 16 young men from the community, empowering them with the knowledge and skills needed to construct water pans. Witnessing their enthusiasm and dedication during the practical sessions was truly inspiring, despite us facing attrition levels and challenges along the way. One of the most pivotal moments came during the installation of water pan bedliners, where we learned valuable lessons in selecting the right materials and ensuring proper installation, we had to go back and adjust the slopes from a 90 degree angle to a 45 degree angle. Despite setbacks and adjustments needed in the field, the sight of rain filling one of the water pans shortly after completion brought immense joy and validation to our efforts. Through this project, we’ve gleaned important lessons:
  • Flexibility and Adaptability: While sticking to our vision, we’ve learned the importance of being agile and willing to pivot when necessary.
  • Resilience in the Face of Challenges: Setbacks are inevitable, but they provide opportunities for growth and innovation. By working with what we have, we’ve been able to overcome obstacles and achieve our goals.
  • Realism in Planning: Ground realities often differ from initial plans, highlighting the importance of realistic budgeting and expectation management.
  • Impact of Small Organizations: Despite our size, we’ve made a tangible difference in the lives of the community youth, underscoring the importance of grassroots initiatives in driving meaningful change.
As we continue our journey, we remain committed to youth economic empowerment, learning from our experiences, and seeking opportunities for collaboration and support. We invite funders to join us on this transformative journey, as we strive to demonstrate the impactful role of small organizations in creating lasting change. Together, we can make a difference, one water pan at a time. Itanya Africa Group community@itanyaafricagroup.org
